Dream Catcher /

Dream Catcher

This is something related to American Indian culture, something called dream catcher.

There are some mystery stories behind it, I guess that’s why it became so popular all over the world,

I like its legend as well, so I embedded my “sleeping dog"  to a dream catcher, and it ended up as a

“dream dog". However, it’s not the most important thing of this post, I am happy to announce that I made

a REAL dream catcher by my own, a huge, ecology one. I love it and love the process of making it,

I want to make another second one, third one…on and on…

This dream catcher was born for a project…

In Denmark, there is an interest project call “HOFFICE“,

you probably noticed it’s a playing of words, derived from the words HOME & OFFICE,

Frankly speaking, you can say HOFFICE is a way that use others’ places as your office,

helping to crate more connection to the society , adding more positive and creative vibe

to working space, and sharing. One of my friend is a very keen to this project, he is one of

the project manager. One day few of them felt that HOFFICE room was so so so boring,

once they stay inside it their energy and brain will be drain out sooner or latter.

As result, they get start to change their working space.

Their building it’s a big office divided into two small room, one called “Reality", another called “Dream",

The idea is to put a huge dream catcher for the “Dream" room, a huge one hanging on the wall, helping

people fly to their dream on looking at it. I take this challenge, and finished it with a very low cost ( around 50kr ).

At the very beginning, the first challenge is to find a big circle ring which can’t be too expensive,

I thought about using hula-hop, or exercise ring, but in the end, we found a free material – the bicycle outer tire.

It’s quite easy to get a abandoned bike in this bicycle kingdom : )

There is a thin metal ring wrapped inside the rubber, I took it out as the ring for the dream catcher.

In my case, I double the rings to make it firmer and wrapped them together with paper tape.

Then I use the jute rope and some blue yarn to cover the paper tape, to make it nice.

With a good ring, the inner pattern is just a peace of cake, you can found lots of tutorials on Internet,

nowadays, people started to use crochet flower to replace the traditional pattern, it’s a modern version,

but I prefer the old way.

Then we are arriving the most tricky part, actually it’s not this hard, it’s just time consuming,

I went to a craft store in Copenhague to look for the beads and fethers, unfortunately they are not my cup of tea.

I was so disappointed by that store, the reason was most of them are made by plastic,

the feathers are dyed with unnatural colors, and look cheap. However they got a expensive price on their packages.

In the end I choosed some wool felts in that shop, that is the only thing that I am willing to pay.

I went back home and started to look on ebay to search the materials that I needed.

While watching that, my boyfriend came over and said that ” I don’t believe that we can’t find feathers in Denmark,

, don’t buy the made in china feathers please, I never want to pay any money for this “.

I was reflecting what my boyfriend said, while cooking dinner that day.

I looked at the walnuts, chestnuts and the beans on the table,

all of sudden I had the idea came up into my mind of using them as the beads for the dream catcher.

I drilled holes on them, put them on. They didn’t disappointed me, they looks extremely good on it.

Using nuts and beans somehow express the simple and nature atmosphere, they make this dream catcher looks sincere.

The next day when my boyfriend headed home after work, he stopped in a park on his way home to collect the feathers on the ground, feathers from the seagulls ,also some branches.

At first, I worried about the colors of feathers won’t match well on the part that I’ve already done.

But after trying them on, I felt those feathers from the seagulls completed the dream catcher.

I was very satisfied with the work of this time. Happy Craft, form this experience,

I realized that the how much the nature offer us, I promised myself, next time when I am looking for materials,

the nature stuffs are always my priority.
